Google IO (their developers conference) happened last week, and I’ve spent the past 7 days thinking about all the announcements they made. In my opinion, Google is on 🔥 right now in the AI space. I know most people think ChatGPT when they think AI, but the pace of innovation and new features rolling out of Google right now should not be ignored. This is no surprise given that the team at Google invented the technology that is powering our AI hungry world.

Here are the top things from last week that I think will help push Google into the forefront of everyone’s mind when they think about AI!

💻️ Gemini Everywhere

The standard Gemini interface is familiar if you’ve used any AI chat in the past few years, but behind the hood, the models that Google is using are top of the charts when it comes to knowledge and rates of hallucination.  

Built into the Chat interface is a whole world of tools that can help you to streamline tasks and perform actions on your behalf. Today I wanted to touch base on 2 that I think are the most useful: Deep Research and Canvas. Note that this is in a paying $20 a month account of Gemini Pro, but limited access to these tools is available to free users too.

Deep Research

This allows you to prompt the AI chat to perform research on your behalf. Extremely powerful tool that can streamline your research process. Here is an example of a deep research use case I used to determine the program feasibility of new Applied AI in Business Degree.

This deep research tool went out and looked at over 200 websites and then created a 40 page document detailing the program feasibility, main competitors, etc…. Absolutely crazy!

Canvas 

This feature allows you to load the output of the AI model into a an area where you can make changes to the output. Think of it like an embedded Google Doc right from within your AI Chat. Once you’ve finished editing the document, you can then send it with a single click right to Google Docs. You can also take the output that is generated and have the AI create something out of it (like a website, infographic, etc..). You can even create basic web applications and games as it will generate the code and then allow you to preview it. This is a crazy powerful tool built right into Gemini and is a fun one to have kids play around with to see what they can create!
