We all have the same 24 hours in a day, but why is it that some people seem to accomplish so much more? The secret lies not just in hard work, but smart work - particularly how effectively one manages time. Enter 'Time Blocking,' a productivity technique that is changing the game for students and educators alike.

What is Time Blocking?

Time Blocking is a time management method that asks you to divide your day into blocks of time. Each block is dedicated to accomplishing a specific task or group of tasks and only those tasks. The idea is to eliminate the constant task-switching that can drain energy and focus. By focusing on one task in its allocated block, you're more likely to complete it efficiently and effectively.

Utilizing the school calendar can significantly augment your time blocking method. Whether you have access to Google Calendar, Microsoft Outlook, or something else, make sure you use your calendar to block off time and schedule your week! Below are a few examples of things to block off in addition to your class schedule. Make sure you include fun activities too!

1. Dedicated Study Time: During your study blocks, focus entirely on the subject at hand. Say goodbye to the stress of juggling multiple subjects at once. For example, you can block out 2 PM to 4 PM for studying Mathematics and 5 PM to 7 PM for English Literature.

2. Assignment Completion: Set aside a block specifically for completing assignments. This can significantly reduce the last-minute scramble to meet deadlines.

3. Effective Breaks: Schedule blocks for relaxation too. By having designated downtime, you're less likely to procrastinate during your work blocks.

Time Blocking Tips

  • Be Realistic: Don't overpack your schedule. Allow for buffer time between blocks to handle unforeseen complications.
  • Prioritize: Allocate your most challenging tasks to your most productive hours.
  • Flexible Blocks: Time blocking isn't about rigid restrictions. If you need to adjust your blocks, do so. It's a tool to help you, not a rule to bind you.
  • Consistency: The more you practice time blocking, the more effective it becomes.

Time Blocking is more than a buzzword. It's a game-changing strategy that, when applied correctly, can enhance your productivity and academic success. Start experimenting with this secret weapon and discover a whole new level of efficiency and accomplishment.

If you prefer a more physical method of time blocking (which some people do!), this notebook by Cal Newport (who is a productivity Genius!) is well regarded as a great way to physical block your time. Its a great planner for those who prefer to physically write things down!
